I donʻt know if youʻve searched for the best beginner surfboard lately on Google, but if you do, youʻll notice that the Wavestorm Surfboard pops up quite often.  And itʻs not just when you search on Google.  Go to any beach and youʻll find someone riding a Wavestorm.

Wavestorm surfboards are great beginner surfboards.  Their wide template and increased volume allow for easy paddling and wave entry.  The Wavestormʻs soft “foam” construction is easier on your body and more difficult to ding.

As it is when choosing any surfboard, the Wavestorm board you choose should be at least 3ʻ longer than you are tall.  There are as many varieties of Wavestorms as there are of any surfboard brand, so not just any Wavestorm will do for the beginner.

So which board do you choose?  Iʻm hoping this article will help you figure out exactly that.

A Few Types of Wavestorm Surfboards

So when you do the google search for “best beginner surfboard” the Wavestorm shows up at the top of the list, but so do a few other soft top surfboards made by other manufacturers.

You see, Wavestorm may have been one of the first soft-top brands to hit the market in the early 2000ʻs, but it definitely isnʻt alone in the market anymore.  Soft tops are hip these days and it seems as if almost every surfboard label has a lineup of softtops of their own.

Regardless of who the manufacturer is, most soft top surfboards are pretty much the same.  You have your longboard, mid length and a shortboard.

Letʻs go over a few of those board styles.  Itʻll help you decide which one is best for you.

  1. The 9ft Wavestorm Surfboard

The 9ʻ Wavestorm is the longest surfboard the company makes.  It is a longboard, designed with stability in mind.  These boards are very easy to paddle and stand up on, making them perfect for the beginning surfer that is 5ʻ6” or taller, especially for those heavier surfers that weigh more than 220lbs.

If you are past the beginner stage, these boards are great for when the waves are small and youʻre just looking to add a little fun into your surfing.

  1. The 8ft Wavestorm Surfboard

The 8ft Wavestorm is a classic.  It is the first surfboard to be produced for the company and for good reason, it is the perfect all around beginner surfboard.  Regardless of your weight or size, this surfboard can probably get you started on your path to surfing.

I teach my kids to surf on the 8ft Wavestorm as well as friends that come into town.  It is the prefect beginner surfboard for those under 220lbs

  1. The 7ft Wavestorm Surfboard

This surfboard by Wavestorm is smaller than the usual surfboards, yet it’s still a high-volume and easily manageable board.

Kids and other beginners on the smaller side usually use the 7ʻ Wavestorm surfboard because it is easier to paddle and manuever in the water, but still has plenty of volume to make it easy to stand up.

4. The 5’6 ft Wavestorm Surfboard

The 5ʻ6” Wavestorm board is not quite a beginner board. It is much smaller than the other boards that Wavestorm makes, with a pointy nose and swallow tail shape.  It has a lot less volume than the other boards as well.

This surfboard is for those who already know how to ride.  It is for those crappy summer days at the beach when the lifeguards throw up the blackball and ban traditional hard top surfboards from the lineup.  At least you can still go out and have fun!

Benefits of the Wavestorm Surfboards

The Wavestorm is one of the best selling surfboards for a reason.  They are perfect to learn on, but I donʻt think thatʻs what makes them so popular.  What makes them popular is the price.  At $200, you really canʻt find a better surfboard at a cheaper price.

But the price canʻt be the only reason.  A lot of things are cheap, but that doesnʻt make them good.  What else makes the Wavestorm Surfboard so popular?  Letʻs go over a few of those reasons.

  1. Wavestorm Surfboards Are Beginner-Friendly

Iʻve said it before and Iʻll say it again, the Wavestorm Surfboard is a great beginner surfboard.  Stable, paddles well, cheap, relatively safe.  What more can a beginner ask in a surfboard?

  1. Wavestorms Are Super Safe

The soft foam used to create these Wavestorm surfboards makes learning easier, and safer.

In addition to the board being made out of soft foam, the fins are made from a soft, rubbery plastic.  I remember slicing my achilles on the fiberglass fins of my first surfboard, but there would be no chance of that happening with these fins.

So beginners and parents alike rest easy.  The Wavestorm surfboard will not be the cause of any potential injuries.

  1. Wavestorms Can Take A Beating

The soft material used to create the Wavestorm surfboard is a lot more durable than a fiberglass board, but does have itʻs limitations.

If you were to place a fiberglass board down on the ground on its rail and accidently hit a rock, you will most likely get a ding on that board.  But a Wavestorm?  You can  bounce a Wavestorm on its rail on the same rock over and over again and nothing will happen.

But accidentally rip the material on the outer skin of a Wavestorm?  Youʻre in trouble.  Water can start to fill in quick and turn your lightweight, playful board into an anchor weighing you down.

Luckily itʻs not too hard to fix a little ding like that.  All you really need is a hot glue gun and a razor blade, just as long as it gets done in a timely manner.

  1. Wavestorms Are Very Lightweight

As a beginner, you donʻt want a board that is too hard to move around.  After all, you have to get that thing from your home and to the beach, so having a lightweight board will make it so youʻre more likely to take it out with you.

Wavestorms are much lighter than a traditional fiberglass surfboard of similar size.  The 8ʻ wavestorm is 11.5 lbs where as an 8ʻ fiberglass board will weigh between 15-20lbs.

Takeaway

Wavestorm surfboards are becoming increasingly popular for a good reason. You better get your hands on one today so you can start surfing tomorrow! You’ll find surfing so easy with these boards.  You will become a professional at catching waves in no time.
